Mindfulness is paying attention in a meaningful way. When the brain becomes distracted mindfulness based techniques allow clients to bring the mind back to an attentive state. Mindfulness is not distraction, it is not suppression of emotion expression, and it is not avoidance according to Goldin. Mindfulness is a directive way to harness attention and balance the emotions. Mindfulness meditation, one type of meditation technique, has been shown to enhance emotional awareness and psychological flexibility as well as induce well-being and emotional balance. Philippe Goldin, a research scientist who heads up the Clinically Applied Affective Neuroscience group in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University, shares his thoughts on mindfulness based stress reduction in this video.

I utilize these techniques to treat social anxiety, PTSD and other stress related conditions.
