Visualization is a powerful technique that creates change, invites wholeness and has the capacity to inspire increased health and wellness of the human condition. During visualization exercises, clients use their mind and body to envision something different than what they are experiencing at the moment. People have been using these strategies to achieve miracles, change attitudes and beliefs, and even promote healing within the body for centuries. Visualization techniques can be used to promote biopsychosocial wellness.

Holistic healing occurs when we are able to draw on the resources of both mind and body to bring about a change in our physical, emotional and psychological state of being. Mayo Clinic physician, Elmer Green, an expert in biofeedback treatment remarked, "Every change in the physiological state is accompanied by an appropriate change in the mental emotional state, conscious or unconscious, and conversely, every change in the mental emotional state, conscious or unconscious, is accompanied by an appropriate change in the physiological state."

As a professional massage therapist, I have noticed the profound difference between clients who are trained and skilled in visualization therapies and those with little or no experience in this area. Many clients seeking relief from aches and pains frequently complain about the tension felt in their neck, back and shoulder areas. In working with these clients, I encourage them to see the specific muscle group being worked in their mind; the cells, the fibers and any other small details that will allow them to hold an accurate portrayal of the area of focus. I then encourage them to use their mind to direct their body to change the process from being short and tight, to loose and lengthening. They key is to vividly hold the image of change in the mind while directing the body towards the desired state of being. Personal experience has shown that those clients who possess the ability to visualize specific areas of their bodies letting go, seem to experience a greater degree of relaxation and overall relief from stress and anxiety.

Candace Pert, Ph.D, and author of "Molecules of Emotion," relates her scientific findings on influencing cellular shifts in the body. The gift of truly seeing, understanding and visualizing the body structure, its form and characteristics, coupled with an ability in the participant to see the body as one would "prefer" it to be, has the powerful effect of changing one's own state of being.

Visualization therapy is a simple yet profound technique which, when applied, has the potential to bring about astounding changes in body, mind and spirit.
